Each year I look forward to checking out the Video Game Awards to join in the slander and inevitable awkward moments. That being said I’ll be the first one to admit that this year’s show actually showed some improvement so I have to give props to Geoff Keighley for working his ass off every year. Also, let me just give quick congratulations to Breath Of The Wild for taking home the GOTY award, it really deserved it in my opinion. Nintendo had an enormous year with a slew of fantastic games and I look forward to what they bring next year. Putting aside the actual awards portion of the show there was actually some interesting looking game reveals throughout the show. So naturally, I wanted to take the time to list off a couple of trailers that I personally found intriguing.
I’ll be honest when this trailer first started I almost immediately tuned out considering the first 40 seconds made the game look like another walking simulator. But right as my eyes almost completely rolled to the back of my head the player equipped a gun and aimed it at a skull-faced creature looking like it was straight from the depths of hell. From there on out the game did a complete 360 into what some would describe as “Dark Souls with guns”. The last few seconds of the trailer painted the game as a face paced action shooter where players have access to supernatural abilities as you slay glowing-eyed demons. I think the trailer caught everyone off guard in the best of ways and I’ll be keeping my eye on this game to see how it turns out.
Soul Calibur 6
Soul. Calibur. 6. Need I say more? It’s been 5 years since the last Soul Calibur game and on December 7, 2017, during the Video Game Awards the sixth installment of the series get’s announced. Who would’ve seen this coming? The trailer showed off some solid looking gameplay in a fight between Sophita and Mitsurugi, I’m no graphics snob but boy did the game look clean. After watching the trailer a few times it looked as if the game has some sort of new counter system going on, I could be wrong but I look forward to finding out what this game has in store. As hype as I am for the new game, the one thing I think is on everyone’s minds is wheres Voldo?
Speaking of games no one expected to see Bayonetta 3 was announced as well. Funny enough it’s also a Switch exclusive which means if you’ve been holding out it might be time to invest in one yourself. If you ask me it’s no surprise that it’s going to be exclusive to the Switch considering no one was trying to fund the game until Nintendo came through and picked it up. Not too much was shown in the trailer, it was simply to let fans of the series know it’s in the works. I personally am a fan of the series so of course, this will be a day one pick up for me. For those of you who have yet to experience the series yourself a combo pack for Bayonetta 1 & 2 was also announced for the switch so now it’s easy to play catch up if you’ve been wanting to check the series out.
Anyway, these are just a few games that stood out to me during the 2017 VGA’s. There’s plenty more I have my eye on (Death Stranding) that I plan on keeping up with. What about you? Anything on this list I didn’t mention that’s worth noting? Let me know in the comments below.
